Musk filed the objections in San Francisco federal court, where the SEC sued him on Oct. 5 to make him testify for the probe, which it launched in April 2022. Musk has given the SEC documents relating to the probe and provided testimony in July last year via video conference, the SEC said in a court filing. ☆ China says it will back global consensus on AI amid tech clash with U.S.

The UK Government are hosting the AI Safety Summit bringing together international governments, leading AI companies, civil society groups and experts in research to consider the risks of AI, especially at the frontier of development, and discuss how they can be mitigated through internationally coordinated action. His comments were delivered at the U.K.'s AI safety summit, which officially kicked off Wednesday at Bletchley Park, England. Wu Zhaohui, China's vice minister of science and technology, said the country was willing to "enhance dialogue and communication in AI safety with all sides." That has placed significant pressure on China's generative AI developers, many of which rely on Nvidia's chips. Raimondo also said the U.S. would look to launch an AI safety institute, hot on the heels of the U.K announcing its own intentions for a similar initiative last week.

A Pentagon official hinted that "directed energy" weapons could be available to protect US bases. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Pentagon has hinted that it could use laser and microwave weapons to fend off attacks on its bases near Israel. Directed energy weapons are defined as those that use high amounts of concentrated energy, usually laser or microwave, that are directed at targets to destroy or damage them. "The US military has tested a variety of DEW (directed energy weapon) prototypes since 2014, primarily for counter-drone missions," it said.

According to the United Nations, there are now some 5.9 million Palestinian refugees worldwide, most of them descendants of that 1948 generation of exiles. The struggle of the Palestinians is felt especially keenly in Jordan, where more than half of the population is either Palestinian or of Palestinian descent – including more than two million Palestinian refugees. But that passion for the Palestinian cause resonates across the Arab world that is home to more than 450 million people. Leon Neal/Pool via REUTERSLONDON, July 18 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's highly contested plan to make it easier to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is set to become law after the government defeated attempts by parliament's upper house to make changes to the legislation. It can now go for Royal Assent, where it is formally approved by the king and becomes law. The legislation will help with the government's plan to send tens of thousands of asylum seekers who arrive on its shores a distance of more than 4,000 miles (6,400 km) to Rwanda. The government is appealing a Court of Appeal ruling last month that the plan was unlawful. It has been criticised by some opposition politicians and civil rights groups as inhumane, cruel and ineffective.
